Younger - Shedonsim (Episode 6)

Image
Shedonism So Shedonism that’s the great name of the book they are publishing that’s written by Jenna Maroney from 30 Rock, she isn’t actually Jenna, that would have been a potentially interesting crossover, Jane Krakowski just plays exactly the same character. Maybe a little toned down. I don't know if they wrote the character for her or if she can't act or what happened. Sutton Foster has to throw the launch party because that’s obvi the kind of thing that assistants who’ve been there 10 minutes do, right? Throw massive important parties for important clients. There’s a thing at the start of the episode about Sutton Foster being #toooldforcrossfit that was so funny , because all young people just jump in and do super high intensity workouts without warming up and are fine afterwards and don’t get sore at all ever. Jenna Maroney wants her book to use the #SlutPack! to promote her book because of empowerment or something. This also seemed to be a funny funny joke but again I th...

Feminist Criminology

I found this in my Google Slides. It must be from my Criminal Justice Admin degree. I always found feminist criminology interesting.  Most of the social theories have kind of the same starting point - crime is caused by a power imbalance. Marxist theory says that capitalism and financial inequality cause crime. I assume there's an explanation for white collar crime but I can't remember, it may just seek to explain criminality in the underclasses.  Feminist criminology began in the 60’s and 70’s. It was a response to the limited ways in which women were dealt with in the criminal justice system.  Traditionally women were controlled by their family and community. They often were not given the opportunity to commit crimes, and the deviance they exhibited was more commonly moving away from sex based roles of of soft feminine wife or mother figure. When women did deviate from these norms tended to be hidden by the family and the woman would be considered mentally ill. If the a...

Younger - Girl Code (Episode 5)

Image
Oh gods! Where to start! There is something genuinely mentally wrong with The Trout. She doesn’t talk or behave like a normal human person. I get that this is supposed to be funny but it just comes across as weird and like there is something properly wrong with this woman. Did they publish Twilight? Why only one copy? In this instalment we have a story of sisterhood, they throw the term Girl Code around like it actually means something to people outside of this show.  It starts with what I can only assume the writers thought was a funny humanising moment where Hilary Duff’s menstrual cup is stuck inside of her. Which, OK, I suppose that could happen but not easily and why hasn’t she been to a doctor? She reckons she’s had it in for like 14 hours.  Hilary Duff leaves the meeting they are having with Hot New Guy who has broken The Trouts brain to deal with her situation but not before we discover that she doesn’t know what a diaphragm is. Is that something young people don’t kno...

Younger - The Exes (Episode 4)

Image
How does this show have 7 seasons? Not much happened in this episode.  The most exciting thing was this necklace... The Trout wearing a medieval torture device. Stutton Foster and Pretty Boy had a lot, just so much sex and that was very much about her pleasure and didn’t do a bad job of positive expressions of female sexuality. That was nice, I guess. And Pretty Boy is hot. Crazy Friend returns for the celebration of Hilary Duff signing The Swede to this publishing company. At least that’s who I think it is. I literally can’t remember what she looks like after she leaves the screen. Her crazy life has her going off to a party “where they are serving sushi off cis gender models”. Wut? Is, is that a joke? It has to be but how is it funny? What am I laughing at? Gender expression? Serving Sushi off models? Then why mention their gender?  Hilary Duff’s gross boyfriend turns up and ruins everything. He really is the absolute worst and I understand that he is part of Hilary’s charac...

Younger - IRL (Episode 3)

I will hate watch this for you forever! Or maybe just season 1. So that was actually better. It still wasn't good and there is no way I would have gotten this far if it weren't for my adoring fans 🤣. The romance between Sutton Foster and the pretty boy (I don't know this actor and I still refuse to learn character names) is actually not too bad. There was a moment when he was maybe a bit gross but I think Sutton found that sexy so you know you do you girlfriend!  Pretty boy redeemed himself by not talking advantage of Sutton when she accidentally took too much Xanax. Low bar, extremely low bar, I know but this show is not setting high ones for anyone. The really bad parts are when she goes to work because then I am supposed to believe she can do her job which is social media heavy without knowing things like what IRL means or how to Tweet. Neither does her over 40 boss. I mean aren't the old hilarious! They don't know simple text speak! It's 2015 not 2005 and ...

PCOS

Women's health or something like it.  I have Polycystic Ovary syndrome, it plays very little role in my life except to occasionally annoy me. Essentially for me, personally, it's harder for me to lose weight and and my periods aren't regular and by that I mean anywhere between 30 days and 3 months was/is normal. It might and I stress might make having children more difficult if I should choose to do that but I haven't even tried so I don't know. The contraceptive pill masks most of the symptoms of PCOS so lots of women don't know they have it. It affects 8-13% of women of reproductive age ( jeanhailes.org.au ). I didn't find out I had it until I was in my late 20's even though I had never had regular periods. In part this was my fault, I never thought to bring up that fact with any medical practitioners I saw. It was just normal for me and I'd Googled it. The internet told me I wasn't that weird. Then I went on the pill and that made my period r...

Feminisms 1

If you can't see yourself in something, it probably isn't meant for you.  That said it doesn't mean you can't engage with, enjoy, comment on or feel things about that media or situation. I am not saying the all female Ghostbusters can only be watched by the ladies, what I am talking about is the #notallmen phenomenon, the backlash to the all female reboots and why some women's survival of sexual assault is believed more readily. I suspect a lot of the animosity that comes from some men when confronted with stories that either don't involve them or only involve them as the bad guy comes from the fact that men have always existed in word where they are the good guy. No matter the circumstance in every story there is someone they can look at who looks, sounds and feels like them who is doing the right thing and saving the day or at least contributing to the story in some meaningful way. Women, People of Colour and non binary people don't have this. They are qui...

Younger Episode 2 - Liza Sows Her Oats

Main thoughts, who is this for? Genuinely who did they make this for?  Is it for old people to make fun of the young or the young to make fun of the old? Was this written by a man? Yes it was? Does that show a lot? Why yes it does. In this episode Sutton Foster who has somehow managed to convince a large publishing company that she is some 15 years younger than she actually is, goes to lunch with Hilary Duff and Hilary's friend. I have literally no idea what the characters names in this show are and I'm not going to learn so there's that. At lunch Crazy Friend (CF) for 'Tops Off Tuesday' all of a sudden get her boobs out. The show treats Tops Off Tuesday like it's just a common thing all millennials are doing, probably not out in public like CF but just regularly on Tuesday's. Now maybe this is just an internet phenomenon that passed me by but the whole way through the episode it's like this is definitely a thing. CF's boobs went viral in the space o...
