Younger - Broke and Pantyless (Episode 7)

Just when we all thought I was never ever going to do this again I thought why not. Watching this shit is probably better than rechecking the news and Facebook and hoping for something new to be there.

Today’s episode is Broke and Pantyless. I feel like any pretence of feminism that this show had has just just been quite firmly thrown out the window. Also is that how we spell ‘pantyless’? Or would it be ‘pantiless’? A question for the ages. 

In this episode Sutton Foster must hide her daughter’s existence from everyone. The daughter who is somewhere else at college, I think needs money because her father, some boring stupid pointless man who is only there to make it harder for Sutton Foster to pretend to be 26 hasn’t paid his half of the daughter’s school fees. 

I don’t know if it’s meant to indicate his youth or hipsterness or what but we learn that #YoungHotGuy is in a band and he plays the Washboard and that’s hot. 

Sutton Foster has to hide the existence of her daughter from everyone but also needs money to cover the other half of her school fees because her father can’t be in the show or something. So she comes up with the clever lie, after it being conveniently handed to her by Hilary Duff that she is late on her student loan payments. Student loans are only something young people are aware of, a woman with a college age daughter wouldn’t know anything about those. 

At this point we are reintroduced to Crazy Friend who suggests, after a number of legitimate side jobs, that Sutton Foster could sell her used underwear on Craigslist. This plan of course fails and makes #HotYoungGuy suss as. 

While all these hilarious shenanigans are happening we are dealing with The Swede and his book and affair with Hilary Duff. I don’t know if she still has a boyfriend, he certainly wasn’t mentioned in this episode. Swede still married, still gross. We are treated to these 2 fabulous necklaces on The Trout though.

Then we have a bit of sexytime with the gross Swede and I think a joke. He puts his fingers definitely in Hilary Duff’s lady garden (while they are in the office) and then The Trout walks in and he gets up and shakes her hand with his vagina hand. 

I suppose it could be argued that the selling of the underwear is some kind of attempt at feminism just bad. 
Their other attempts have also been bad so… Our next money making venture also ends in disaster but we get to see and talk to #OldHotGuy again so that’s nice. Although #OldHotGuy should possibly count as creepy if he’s attracted to the younger members of staff. 
There might have been a joke about how young people get everything from Buzzfeed, which do they? The Trout gave Sutton Foster the money and we got to see the washboard played again #hot.

Sk8 - 1x08

Today we start with the youth not knowing who or what Punky Brewster is like, no comprehension whatsoever. It is technically too old for 26 year olds in 2015 but it ran in syndication for their entire childhood so it would probably still just be part of their consciousness even if they hadn’t really watched it. So they would have thought it an odd reference rather than just complete dead non understanding stares that we got. For context Sutton Foster was describing the pig tails she had as a young teenager as being like Punky Brewster's, the quick cover was to say she looked like a funky rooster and that was accepted. Oh you’re just high, it’s okay. Cool. Great writing. Then we discover that Sutton Foster doesn’t know how to play video games and again we, as 26 year olds are shake, family. Feminist Criminology

I found this in my Google Slides. It must be from my Criminal Justice Admin degree. I always found feminist criminology interesting.  Most of the social theories have kind of the same starting point - crime is caused by a power imbalance. Marxist theory says that capitalism and financial inequality cause crime. I assume there's an explanation for white collar crime but I can't remember, it may just seek to explain criminality in the underclasses.  Feminist criminology began in the 60’s and 70’s. It was a response to the limited ways in which women were dealt with in the criminal justice system.  Traditionally women were controlled by their family and community. They often were not given the opportunity to commit crimes, and the deviance they exhibited was more commonly moving away from sex based roles of of soft feminine wife or mother figure.
